For the third year running, I will be the official photographer for NBA Miami Heat basketball player Luol Deng at his UK basketball camp this summer 2014, held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
About Deng Camp Top 50:
In response to the recent funding cuts by UK Sport, Luol turns his attention to the UK’s foremost rising stars this week by inviting 50 of the nation’s brightest talents to put their abilities to the test in a bid to be ranked the UK’s #1.
Each of the 50 players attending Deng Camp Top 50 have been hand-selected by a consortium of coaches and will undergo a series of individual drills, combine testing, classroom analysis, strength and conditioning training and competitive games during an intense 3-day workout.
Amongst the coaches attending Deng Camp 2014 will be Luol’s High School coach Joe Mantegna (Blair Academy, NJ) and U16 and U17 USA Basketball Head Coach Don Showalter. The pair will conduct an on-court seminar for prospective coaches on Saturday 23rd August, the day following camp end, free of charge.
On day one, following a series of evaluations that evening, players will be given an initial ranking. As the Camp progresses, each players’ performance will influence their position and, on the final day (Friday 22nd August) an official rankings list will be announced in front of an audience of basketball enthusiasts. A dedicated media team will follow the players’ every movement and capture exclusive footage for Luol’s social media channels, including mic’d up coaches and player diaries.
With the conviction that this new direction is in the best of interests of the players and the national team, Luol is as upbeat and as motivated as ever. We hope you will enjoy being part of the journey and wish all players the very best of luck.
Message from Luol Deng:
This year we are trying something different and I wholeheartedly believe that it is the way forward. It is my feeling that elite players of this age are often neglected or overlooked when, in reality, they are the very individuals that should be receiving our upmost attention and support. This is why we decided to launch the TOP 50 camp.
Above all else, I always enjoy coming back to my camp, seeing both familiar faces – that have been with us from the start – and new faces whom we welcome into the family for the first time. I look forward to seeing you all on Friday 22nd August at 2pm for the All-Star game. It is free to attend and promises to be an electrifying event (with much still to play for).
